NBSRT Saint John Branch Scholarship Fund

 

You are invited to contribute to the Scholarship Fund through the purchase of memorial cards located at our six Saint John funeral homes, or by the use of special occasion card inserts (birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas, etc,) available at our fall and spring luncheons.

Make your cheque payable to University of New Brunswick and mark it “Re NBSRT”. All contributions will be credited to the Saint John Campus to help increase the value of the scholarship (presently about $1000.00) You will receive an official receipt for income tax purposes.

 

 

 

 

 

Historical Background of the Scholarship Fund

 

 

The history of the establishment of the NBSRT Scholarship Fund dates back to the early 1960’s. Memorabilia will be on display at our luncheons.

 

By 1971, through subscriptions and concerts, the Education Committee of the Teachers Association of Saint John City and County was able to provide scholarships from a principal sum of $3552.40. A cashbook records early donations beginning on March 19, 1963 with Mother House, Sisters of Charity donating $500.00. Many other smaller donations are also recorded.

 

In 1979 assets totaling $4893.90 plus $3640.00 paid in scholarships for a total of $8533.99 were transferred to the Awards Committee, University of New Brunswick.

 

Our present contact is Marian J. Williams, Senior Development Officer, UNBSJ. Matching grants of up to 50% are available if our contribution is made early in the year (May or June) We receive the annual endowment report for the period ending April 30th

each year.

 

            The terms of reference for the scholarship are: The New Brunswick Society of Retired Teachers, Saint John Branch Scholarship is tenable at UNBSJ and is awarded on the basis of academic ability and financial need to a student of School District #20.
